Why We Decided to Become Adventure Photographers

We started out as hobbyists. We both loved photography and wanted to share our adventures with others, so we decided to become adventure photographers. We love to travel and see new places, so that became an important part of our lives as well. We’re always looking for new adventures!

Our first big trip was a little spontaneous. I had been dreaming about taking a trip to Yucatán Peninsula for a while, but it wasn’t until I met Oliver that I decided to pull the trigger. Travel has always been a big part of my life and so it was the ultimate test to see if Oliver and I would last as a couple.

We did not do a ton of planning of this trip. Luckily, there are plenty of resources online that can help provide ideas (and more). Oliver and I have always been really great about taking photos of one another candidly while traveling. However we noticed that we did not have a lot of photos of us together. While searching for tours to various places such as Chichén-Itzá, we came across a photographer’s photograhy tour company of sorts. This company not only took us to some amazing sites, provided in-depth knowledge, but also took photos of Oliver and I while we were busy photographing our surroundings. This is when we realized that there was a niche to be filled. Especially in one of most beautiful locations in the world, Alaska.

When we travel, we want to share our experiences with others. We love to inspire people and show them that they can do the same thing. Sharing our adventures helps us remember what we did on the trip and how much fun it was. We started Swift Fox + Raven Photography with the goal of capturing special moments for people during their travels throughout Alaska and the rest of the world. Whether it be a vacation, or a big event like your engagement or elopement!

Alaska is a beautiful state. It’s home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes in North America and even on Earth.

We moved here because we wanted to be surrounded by beauty all of the time. Alaska has endless opportunities for adventure photography, whether you’re exploring glaciers or taking photos from an helicopter window seat!

We hope you enjoy our work as much as we do! Our goal has always been to inspire people through adventuring and photography. We want you to get out there and do what you love, even if it’s not exactly what we do! Our photos show that there is beauty in the world and it’s worth exploring. The world is a big place, so why not take advantage of all its opportunities?

We know how hard it can be for someone who doesn’t have much experience with adventuring or photography so we’re going to help them along by sharing our expertise with them!

If you’re looking for ways to document go on your own adventure, here are some tips:

  • Start small. If it’s been years since your last adventure or if you’ve never been on one before, don’t feel pressured into doing something extreme right away. Start with something small like hiking a local trail or taking a kayak trip down the river near where you live. Once that feels comfortable, expand outward from there!
  • Ask questions when necessary. When planning an excursion into the unknown–especially one involving other people–it’s important not only for yourself but also others in attendance if possible; otherwise things might go sideways very quickly without proper communication beforehand. This can be as simple as asking, “What are some things we need to know about this hike before we start?” or “Do you have any suggestions for what might make this trip more enjoyable?”

We’ve always been into photography, but we never considered ourselves as professional photographers before. We thought of ourselves more as hobbyists who occasionally took pictures on trips and vacations. The idea of becoming full-time adventure photographers was something we never thought would happen, until it did! Over time, our passion for photography grew stronger and stronger until we finally decided it was time to make this dream come true.
